Leonardo DRS starts tactical radar production in the UK
Leonardo DRS has established a new subsidiary, DRS UK, and launched local production of tactical radars in the United Kingdom. The new purpose-built production site is intended to meet growing demand for counter-UAS, air defence and active protection systems.
The site gives the company a dedicated local presence to support UK defence customers, industry partners and system integrators, and is intended to strengthen long-term support for UK programmes, according to a press release from Leonardo DRS. The operation will also serve as a hub for the company's tactical radar business in the UK and the rest of Europe.
"Establishing DRS UK and launching a full local tactical radar capability strengthens our ability to support customers and partners with the proximity, responsiveness and manufacturing capacity needed to meet evolving operational requirements," says John Baylouny, President and CEO of Leonardo DRS.
DRS's tactical radars are designed to detect, track and classify airborne and ground threats, including drones as well as rockets, artillery and mortars. According to the company, more than 10,000 radar panels have been deployed with the US Armed Forces, NATO allies and other international customers.
“By establishing this local capacity, we are creating high-value engineering and manufacturing opportunities while positioning DRS UK to support future export growth and deliver greater value to customers across the UK and Europe,” says Max Cohen, Senior Vice President and General Manager overseeing DRS's tactical radar portfolio.
Leonardo DRS did not disclose where in the UK the site is located, the size of the investment, how many people will be employed, or when production will reach full scale.
