Italian researchers to add electronic components to electric conductive fabric

The lab of Dr. Annalisa Bonfiglio at University of Cagliari (Italy) is working on assembling of electronic devices and circuits on textile substrates to allow the design and production of a new generation of garments with distributed sensors and electronic functions.
Assembling on the textiles are so far possible in two ways. A "top down" one, consisting of assembling devices to transfer on textile substrates and a "bottom up" approach consisting of assembling an electronic fabric starting from electronically functionalized textile basic components.

The principle builds on organic semiconductors having the electrical properties of semiconductors and the mechanical properties of plastics.
