Apple to investigate claims of Pegatron labour violations

The watchdog organisation – China Labor Watch (CLW) – has uncovered information that confirms the recent sudden deaths of several workers at Pegatron's Shanghai facility.

However, CLW claims that Pegatron never carried out in-depth investigations into the causes of death after the incidents occurred. CLW has demanded that Apple and Pegatron perform autopsies on each deceased worker and verify the actual reason for the workers’ deaths, including potential hazards in the production process that continue to pose a risk to other workers in the factory. The youngest worker – a 15-year old boy – died of pneumonia on October 9 in Shanghai Shuguang Hospital. Pre-employment physical examination conducted in September indicated that he was in good health. According to CLW, Pegatron has denied fault in the boy's death, as well as the other deaths, and has refused to conduct in-depth investigations. Apple has now reportedly sent medical experts to Pegatron's Shanghai facility. In a statement from Apple sent to Reuters, the company states that: "While they (Pegatron) have found no evidence of any link to working conditions there, we realize that is of little comfort to the families who have lost their loved ones." "Apple has a long-standing commitment to providing a safe and healthy workplace for every worker in our supply chain, and we have a team working with Pegatron at their facility to ensure that conditions meet our high standards," the statement continues.
