More than 250 jobs at risk as Nokia plans cuts in Finland

Nokia is planning to cut up to 253 positions in Finland. The company wants to reduce costs and redirect resources towards areas such as defence, AI and data centres.

The cuts would affect Nokia’s operations in Espoo, Tampere and Oulu, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported, according to Yle. Change negotiations with employee representatives will begin on 12 October. In an email to Yle, Nokia’s communications chief Maria Vaismaa confirmed that the process has started. According to the European Restructuring Monitor, the cuts are expected to begin taking effect on 2 November.

The move is driven by a need to reduce costs and prioritise investment in areas where the company sees growth potential. In Finland, these are mainly defence, AI and data centres. According to the European Restructuring Monitor, Nokia has said that the reductions will be carried out responsibly.

Nokia has not disclosed how the positions will be divided between the three sites or which parts of the business will be affected.
