India’s electronic components market is evolving. Is the supply chain ready?

As India enters its next phase of electronics manufacturing growth, Waldom highlights an important opportunity: improving access to existing global inventory rather than simply increasing the amount of stock held locally.

As India’s electronic components market continues to expand, growing demand, increased global investment and evolving customer expectations are creating new opportunities and challenges for the electronics supply chain.

In its latest thought leadership article, “India’s Electronic Components Market Is Evolving. Is the Supply Chain Ready?” Waldom shares key insights gathered from conversations with global component manufacturers and distributors.

As India enters its next phase of electronics manufacturing growth, Waldom highlights an important opportunity: improving access to existing global inventory rather than simply increasing the amount of stock held locally.

“In many of our conversations, India was not being discussed simply as another growth market, but as a market expected to become significantly more important to global business in the years ahead,” the article says. “Component manufacturers are also looking closely at their routes to market. As the customer base expands, many are exploring how to strengthen or broaden their distribution channels to reach more customers across the country.”

Demand for electronic components is being supported by growth across multiple sectors, from automotive and EVs to telecom infrastructure, IT hardware and data infrastructure, industrial applications, consumer electronics and renewable energy. At the same time, India is looking to move further up the electronics manufacturing value chain, the article says.

“The country has already established a significant electronics manufacturing base, and the next phase is increasingly focused on strengthening the component ecosystem that supports it,” the article says. “That means greater investment in areas such as PCBs, passive and electromechanical components, connectors, modules and other critical parts of the electronic components supply chain.”

The article also highlights some concerns as the sector continues to grow. While manufacturers want broader reach and greater availability, customers want components faster. But distributors understandably don’t want to solve that challenge simply by putting significantly more inventory on their shelves.

Besides, establishing and operating local logistics and inventory infrastructure can still be challenging in India.

Another theme that stood out is that while India has traditionally been perceived as a highly price-sensitive market, quality, authenticity and traceability are becoming increasingly important when sourcing electronic components.

Overall, the sense is that the market is marching ahead.

“As India’s electronic components ecosystem grows, the opportunity isn’t simply to bring more components into the country,” the article says. “It is to build a supply chain that can make those components available efficiently, without unnecessarily multiplying inventory or sidelining usable products because of outdated practices.”
