OCP, Envision power up first phase of BESS at Morocco mining site
OCP Green Energy, a subsidiary of Morocco’s OCP Group, signed a contract in 2025 with Chinese technology supplier Envision Energy to supply and commission a storage system based on LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology.
OCP Green Energy, the OCP Group subsidiary dedicated to generating and storing electricity from renewable sources, has installed its first BESS (Phase I) at the Benguerir mining site in Morocco.
This comes just a few months after Phase I of OCP Green Energy’s solar PV program entered service, with a total capacity of 202 MWp across the solar plants at Benguerir (67 MWp), Foum Tizi (30 MWp) and Oulad Farès in Khouribga (105 MWp), OCP said in a press release.
OCP Green Energy signed a contract in 2025 with Chinese technology supplier Envision Energy to supply and commission a storage system based on LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology. With a capacity of 25 MW / 125 MWh, equivalent to five hours of storage, the system is coupled with the existing solar plant at the Benguerir mining site.
This investment of close to 170 million dirhams (approximately USD 17.5 million) covered the acquisition of BESS equipment and batteries, together with the full scope of integration works, including civil and electrical engineering, as well as studies and project management, OCP said.
The project also benefits from USD 20 million in financing from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF), a program led by the African Development Bank.
“As we announced last year when our first solar PV projects were commissioned, storage is the natural extension of our energy strategy,” Omar Kadir, General Manager of OCP Green Energy, said. “It allows us to reconcile the variable output of renewable energy with the continuous needs of our industrial platforms, while strengthening the reliability of our energy supply.”
Envision Energy said that it provided the full storage system and led the commissioning work, integrating the BESS with the site's solar generation, grid conditions and industrial load profile.
