Geely unveils new charging system that replenishes battery in 4.5 minutes

Geely announced a 2.2 MW charging technology designed to reduce charging times to levels not previously seen in mass-produced solutions. According to the company, a vehicle equipped with the new system can charge from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes. Charging to 97% is expected to take 8 minutes and 40 seconds under standard ambient temperature conditions.

"Current charging speeds are already approaching the physical limit, and the marginal ​gains from pursuing even faster speeds in the future will become increasingly small" - Geely executive Zhang Dewang told Reuters.

Alongside the charging system, the company unveiled a new generation of traction batteries and a refreshed version of its Galaxy E5 electric SUV. To manage battery safety at such high charging power, Geely is using artificial intelligence. The manufacturer employs cloud-based digital twins and deep learning models running directly inside the vehicle. The system is designed to monitor battery health, control temperature, and predict potential safety risks.

China's electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly focused on technological competition. Automakers are now competing not only on driving range but also on advanced driver assistance systems and charging speed.

Geely's announcement follows BYD's earlier introduction of its own ultra-fast charging system. According to the company, its technology can increase battery charge from 10% to 97% in about nine minutes. BYD is also expanding its charging infrastructure and plans to deploy around 90,000 charging stations by 2028.

Geely executives say the future charging market will resemble traditional fuel stations, where drivers of different vehicle brands will be able to use the same infrastructure. The company believes that simultaneous investment by multiple charging network operators will accelerate the adoption of ultra-fast charging beyond China.
