China’s CXMT says 5th-gen DRAM platform enters mass production

CXMT, China’s leading producer of DRAM, has said its fifth-generation technology platform had entered mass production, a potential breakthrough that could make China compete for the memory market share with the likes of Samsung and SK hynix, according to a report by Reuters.
The new platform is designed to make more powerful memory chips at lower cost and using less power.
CXMT said the new platform allows more memory to fit on each chip and more chips to be made from each silicon wafer, according to the Reuters report.
“Our process capability is now on par with the most advanced mass-produced nodes out there in the industry,” Luo Xiaodong, CXMT's vice president and head of its marketing centre, said.
US export controls have restricted China’s access to advanced chipmaking equipment but Beijing is seeking to narrow the technology gap by investing in indigenous chipmaking firms.
With backing from state-owned shareholders, CXMT has emerged as the world’s fourth-largest producer of DRAM chips. Its customers include Chinese smartphone, PC and server manufacturers.
