Hyosung secures $287 million US orders for UHV transformers

The ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transformers will be deployed at newly built AI data centers in the northern and southern regions of the US. They consist of 765kV UHV transformers worth USD 163 million and 345kV UHV transformers worth USD 124 million.

South Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries has announced that it has signed supply contracts totaling approximately USD 287 million for ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transformers with two major US tech companies.

The ultra-high-voltage transformers ordered this time will be deployed at newly built AI data centers in the northern and southern regions of the United States. They consist of 765kV ultra-high-voltage transformers worth approximately USD 163 million and 345kV ultra-high-voltage transformers worth approximately USD 124 million, and will be supplied to data centers that consume enormous amounts of electricity, Hyosung said.

“In the AI era, demand for power infrastructure has exploded, ushering in a super cycle that comes once in 60 years,” said Hyosung Group Chairman Cho Hyun-joon. “Based on the competitiveness of our ‘total solution’—covering not only transformers and circuit breakers but also power stabilization systems such as HVDC, STATCOM, and ESS—we will make Hyosung Heavy Industries a global top-three player within five years.”

The US Tennessee ultra-high-voltage transformer plant acquired by Hyosung Heavy Industries in 2020 has now become a key base for taking the lead in the local supply chain. In July, the company established a joint venture with Quanta, a leading North American energy infrastructure solutions company, for ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers.
