Sony, TSMC plan $6.4 billion image sensor factory in Japan
Sony Semiconductor Solutions will hold a controlling stake in the venture — about 60% — with TSMC owning the remaining 40%.
Sony Group and TSMC are in talks to invest a combined USD 6.4 billion in a joint image sensor factory in Japan, according to Bloomberg.
The target for the start of production is 2029.
TSMC is the world’s largest contract chipmaker while Sony is the world’s largest maker of image sensors that are widely used in smartphones and autos.
According to Reuters, the new facility will be located inside Sony’s campus in Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions will hold a controlling stake in the venture — about 60% — with TSMC owning the remaining 40%.
Sony and TSMC are targeting demand from the automotive and robotics sectors, Bloomberg said. Japan’s government may provide financial support to the venture. The two companies had signed an MOU in May to form the JV.
