E-paper displays: More than paper – for a smart world

The principle of e-paper displays is based on charged particles suspended in a clear liquid. These move to the sides of microcapsules or microcups and become visible when an electric field is applied. E-paper displays show images and text even in bright light and in direct sunlight. They do not require backlighting. Under the motto "More than paper - for a smart world", the Asian company Seekink Inc. has developed numerous e-paper display technologies since 2015. The company has grown to become one of the largest manufacturers of e-paper and offers not only classic e-paper displays (EPD), but also complete solutions based on the latest technologies such as NFC, WLAN and Bluetooth.

"We hope that with eco-friendly e-paper technology as our business foundation and EPD development and innovation, we can support the success of our customers in various IoT sectors and contribute to achieving a low-carbon society," said Xiao Xuming, CEO of Seekink.

After founding the company in 2015 and entering into a strategic partnership with E-Ink, the company ranked first in the industry in terms of shipments in 2016. In 2017, a strategic partnership was concluded with the three largest customers on the global market and new 3-colour display models were launched. Further EPD production lines and the development of TFT ARRAYs and driver ICs were commissioned in 2018. Other developments included the first e-ink phone and an ePaper display with keyboard. Deliveries for the year as a whole totalled 15 million units. In 2019, international sales already accounted for 70% of total sales. Seekink introduced large-format and full-colour e-paper products. Deliveries increased by 200% compared to the previous year and reached 30 million units. In 2020, the introduction of EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) followed and the development of e-reader products began in cooperation with BOE Technology Group Co. In 2021, the collaboration with Tencent led to the development of products in the education sector such as interactive whiteboards. In 2022, the total shipment reached over 60 million units and by 2023, the application products have covered more industries including smart office, healthcare and transportation.

Seekink now supplies the transport, smart workplace, digital signage, e-reader and smart hospital markets.

There are many areas of IoT that still need to be explored. There is a strong demand for ePaper displays. With the trend towards digitalisation, the global energy shortage is becoming increasingly apparent. Traditional electronic displays such as LCD displays still have great advantages in terms of production capacity and price. SEEKINK's strength lies in its module production capability. In order to contribute to the development of the ePaper industry and a sustainable society, Seekink, as a pioneer in ePaper solutions, offers reliable solutions based on innovation. Automated production enables large-format, flexible displays as well as UV and optical bonding services. Resources from upstream and downstream industries can also be integrated. OEM and ODM services for ePaper hardware and devices are also offered.

Seekink offers customised EPD modules and manufactures EPDs with e-ink technologies in commercial sizes. Optical bonding services, OEM services and ODM solutions are available.

Seekink's product range includes various sizes from (1 to 42) inches in the colour variants BW, BWR, BWY, BWRY, N-colour and full colour as well as in many resolution variants. For indoor use, for example, there is a (23.5 or 28) inch full-colour display or a 42-inch digital whiteboard. Monochrome displays in sizes (13.3; 28 and 31.2) inches are available for outdoor use. Displays in sizes (10.1 and 10.8) inches are suitable for e-notebooks and e-readers.

Seekink works together with strategic co-operation partners for applications in the fields of electronic labels, smart wear, smart home, smart retail, smart storage and smart logistics.

Challenges include yellowing problems on the module, short optical path lengths in the light guide plate and the shortening of the 8 mm mounts to 5.8 mm. The solutions are the use of UV-blocking OCA (Optically Clear Adhesives) to prevent ultraviolet rays from reaching the glass layer. UV transfer printing technology is used to reduce the size of the dots on the light guide plate. An innovative UV transfer printing process was used to achieve a larger display area.

Seekink Europe is founded this year under the management of Thomas de Laar. This will ensure excellent and personalised support for customers in the EMEA region. De Laar, the previous CEO of Holitech Europe GmbH, explains: "We are concentrating our core business on e-paper in order to be able to provide customers with targeted advice and to focus our previous global display business more strongly on the new technologies!"

This year, Seekink will be represented at numerous trade fairs such as the International Sign Expo (ISE) in Barcelona, Embedded World in Nuremberg, Display Week SID in San Jose and Electronica in Munich.
