0805-size monolithic ceramic capacitor packaged in 2mm embossed tape

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has started mass production of 0805-size (2.0 x 1.25mm) monolithic ceramic capacitors packaged in narrow-pitch (2mm) embossed tape.

The conventional 0805-size monolithic ceramic capacitors are packaged in a 4mm-pitch embossed tape that holds 10,000 pieces per reel with a diameter (mm) of Φ 330. These new products are packaged in a narrow-pitch (2mm) embossed tape that holds double the quantity per reel (20,000 pieces per reel) of the same Φ 330-mm diameter. Therefore, this packaging is more eco-friendly and also saves space. This packaging can also reduce the frequency of changing the reel by the customer. Also note that the same embossed tape can be used for 0805-size 22µF capacitors. Murata has been endeavoring to adopt narrow-pitch taping for the packaging of all sizes of products starting with the packaging of the 01005-size (0.4 x 0.2mm) products in 4mm-width, 1mm-pitch embossed tape. The company received a request from a customer who uses narrow-pitch taping (8mm-width, 1mm-pitch paper tape) for 0201-size (0.6 x 0.3mm) and 0402-size (1.0 x 0.5mm) products. This customer wanted to adopt narrow-pitch taping also for 0805-size products - which are large capacitance products with a lot of demand from customers - in order to reduce the frequency of changing the reels. To respond to this customer's request, Murata develop 2mm-pitch embossed tape for packaging 0805-size products together with its tape manufacturer. During this endeavor, the companies were faced with the following issues. The development of 2mm-pitch embossed tape for packaging 0805-size products is considered to be extremely difficult. Murata did, however, successfully develop the 2mm-pitch embossed tape after much trial and error in the joint effort with the tape manufacturer and optimizing the die shape and molding conditions. Mass production started at Fukui Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. from July 2013.
