Compal Communications selects Broadcom

Taiwanese cellphone manufacturer Compal Communications (CCI) has chosen Broadcom's BCM21664T reference platform for use in its production of Android smartphones.

The BCM21664T is optimized for the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system (OS) and includes a dual-core, 1.2GHz HSPA+ processor, powerful graphics and application processing capabilities, and a full suite of wireless connectivity technologies, including GPS, Miracast and NFC. The platform also incorporates a low power solution for 2G/3G dual-SIM dual-standby, an essential feature in emerging markets. "Compal Communications leads the market in supporting our OEM customers with a diverse portfolio of smartphone designs," said Shawn Tien, CCI Director of Marketing. "As we expand and scale with new models and features, we are excited to partner with Broadcom to deliver affordable smartphones that provide the enhanced functionality and superior graphics consumers have come to expect with a premium Android experience." "Broadcom's turnkey platforms are designed to simplify and expedite production of smartphones," said Michael Civiello, Broadcom Senior Director of Marketing, Mobile Platform Solutions. "By offering a complete solution that includes a proven HSPA+ modem, pre-qualified hardware components and software applications that have been tested and accepted by global operators, Broadcom enables ODMs to develop smartphones with competitive differentiators in three months or less and at a lower cost." Availability: BCM21664T is currently sampling with customers. CCI expects phones based on the BCM21664T to be available in the second quarter of 2013.
