MediaTek, Ericsson complete multi-vendor pre-6G trial with T-Mobile

This achievement marks the first time a leading service provider, leading network infrastructure provider and a leading chipset vendor have come together to demonstrate pre-6G technology with 400MHz channel bandwidth under realistic conditions in the field.

MediaTek and Ericsson have announced the successful completion of the “world’s first” multi-vendor pre-6G over-the-air (OTA) connection utilizing 400 MHz channel bandwidth, demonstrating the potential to achieve peak download speeds of more than 5Gbps and upload speeds of more than 2Gbps.

This milestone shows that the 6G vision is transitioning from single-vendor laboratory concepts to an interoperable, multi-vendor 6G ecosystem operating under real-world conditions, MediaTek said in a press release.

The trial also achieved ultra-low end-to-end latency as low as 4 milliseconds, with the potential to unlock applications such as physical AI, real-time XR/AR communications, and instant response connected devices.

“In working closely together, we’re showing that the entire ecosystem, from chipsets to networks, aligns to make 6G a reality for everyone, and proving that seamless interoperability between silicon and network infrastructure is essential to accelerating 6G commercialization,” said Dr. Mingxi Fan, Corporate Vice President at MediaTek.

By combining MediaTek’s pre-6G User Equipment (UE) Proof-of-Concept (PoC) platform and Ericsson’s advanced pre-6G radio infrastructure over T-Mobile's network as part of its 6G Innovation Hub efforts, the partners have validated that the ecosystem is aligning to make next-generation connectivity a commercial reality, the press release said.

“Together with Ericsson and MediaTek, we’re leaders in the industry from 6G vision to reality — proving multi-vendor pre-6G technology on our own network today, so the experience is ready long before it reaches customers’ hands,” said Ankur Kapoor, Chief Network Officer at T-Mobile.

“This joint demonstration shows how Ericsson technology can enable AInative networks with greater uplink capacity and low latency — opening a new era of connectivity,” said Johan Hultell, Head of Networks Strategy and Product Management at Ericsson. “It marks the start of our journey, together with our ecosystem partners, toward commercial 6G.”
