X-FAB breaks ground on Chips Act-funded cleanroom in Erfurt

X-FAB has started construction of a new cleanroom at its site in Erfurt, Germany, to expand production of microsystems and photonics. The Fab4Micro project receives EUR 127.4 million in funding from the German federal government and the state of Thuringia under the EU Chips Act.

The project is run by the subsidiary X-FAB MEMS Foundry GmbH and continues the transformation of the Erfurt site into the X-FAB Group's hub for microsystems, according to a press release from X-FAB. The new cleanroom is intended to support growing demand from the automotive, industrial and medical markets, and to contribute to Europe's sovereignty in semiconductor technology.

The funding comes from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Areas.

"Today's groundbreaking ceremony marks an important milestone for X-FAB and underscores our long-term commitment to innovation, growth, and supporting our customers worldwide," says Gabriel Kittler, CEO of the Erfurt site.

The new facility is scheduled to begin initial production by the end of 2028.
