GlobalFoundries finalises $375 million CHIPS award for quantum semiconductor R&D
GlobalFoundries has finalised a definitive agreement with the US Department of Commerce for a USD 375 million research and development award to advance its Quantum Technology Solutions business. The funding is tied to milestone achievements over a five-year period.
The award is intended to accelerate the build-out of a domestic US quantum semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, helping quantum computing companies move from research and prototyping toward commercial-scale production. GF's efforts focus on cryogenic CMOS technologies, advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration, according to a press release from the company.
The quantum award comes alongside a recently announced USD 300 million letter of intent with the same Department of Commerce office to accelerate R&D in silicon photonics – two technology areas GF describes as foundational to future AI infrastructure and advanced computing systems.
"Since launching, we have expanded engagement with customers and ecosystem partners who are leveraging GF’s R&D and manufacturing expertise to address some of the industry’s most challenging scaling requirements," said Nicholas Sergeant, Vice President and General Manager of Quantum Technology Solutions at GlobalFoundries.
