Sivers Semiconductors to expand photonics manufacturing in Glasgow

Swedish company Sivers Semiconductors is investing USD 30 million to expand its indium phosphide manufacturing facility in Glasgow, Scotland.

Upon completion, the facility is expected to support annual production of more than 100 million CW DFB lasers. The expansion begins in the second half of 2026 and is expected to be operational in Q4 2027.

The investment is driven by growing demand for optical interconnect technology in AI data centres. As hyperscale operators build larger AI clusters and shift toward higher-speed networking architectures, Sivers sees InP-based lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers as increasingly important enablers of the high-performance optical connectivity these systems require, according to a press release from the company.

The expansion also marks a strategic shift in Sivers' manufacturing model – from a Fab-Lite approach to a hybrid strategy combining expanded in-house capacity with external foundry, packaging and manufacturing partners in Asia.

"The scale of today's AI infrastructure build-out is creating unprecedented demand across the optical supply chain. Our customers need significantly more laser production capacity and, just as importantly, the confidence that supply will be there when their programs ramp," said Vickram Vathulya, President and CEO of Sivers Semiconductors.
