Infineon and Skeleton Technologies to develop power solutions for AI data centres
Infineon Technologies and Estonian energy storage company Skeleton Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on solid-state transformers and sidecar power systems for AI data centre infrastructure. The partnership combines Infineon's power semiconductors with Skeleton's supercapacitor technology and power conversion expertise.
The collaboration targets two specific technology areas. The first is next-generation solid-state transformers for medium-voltage AC to high-voltage DC conversion, combining Infineon's CoolSiC power semiconductors with Skeleton's power conversion systems. The second is GaN-based peak-shaving systems that pair Skeleton's supercapacitor technology with Infineon's CoolGaN semiconductors, according to a press release from the companies.
"AI data centers need to deliver dramatically more power to increasingly dense GPU infrastructure, without allowing the power system itself to consume more space," said Taavi Madiberk, CEO of Skeleton Technologies. "By combining Infineon's precision in converting and controlling power with Skeleton's expertise in storing and delivering very high power at speed, we can increase power density across the AI power infrastructure."
The underlying challenge both companies are addressing is the same: AI data centres are demanding dramatically more power in increasingly dense configurations, and the power delivery chain from grid to GPU rack is becoming a bottleneck.
