In search of the next battery generation – this is where companies stand

While the Finnish company Donut Lab presents increasing evidence for its exceptional "Donut Battery," which can be charged in less than 7 minutes, several Asian companies appear to have caught up—or even overtaken it. Evertiq has taken a closer look at the batteries from Donut Lab, BYD, CATL, and Zeekr. The race for the next battery generation sees companies like Donut Lab generating attention with ambitious promises, while Asian industrial giants follow with new solutions, focusing on batteries with greater range, faster charging, and reduced use of critical raw materials. Donut Lab impresses with extremely high energy density and lifespan but is not yet in series production. BYD and Zeekr are currently leading in practical implementation, achieving charging times approaching classic refueling stops. CATL is pursuing an alternative approach with sodium-ion technology, which could be particularly relevant from a raw material and cost perspective. The central question remains: Is the existing charging infrastructure ready for this next generation of battery technologies?
