EU invests 700 million euros in largest chip pilot production NanoIC

The European Union has announced the launch of a central infrastructure project under the EU Chips Act. The new NanoIC pilot production facility at the IMEC research center in Leuven, Belgium, will become the largest European pilot line for advanced semiconductor technologies to date. The EU is providing 700 million euros in funding for the project, supplemented by further national and private investments. The NanoIC pilot line is intended to give companies, research institutions, and start-ups access to near-industrial manufacturing environments, aiming to test new chip technologies, processes, and materials under realistic production conditions and transfer them to industrial application more quickly, thereby narrowing the gap between research and mass production. The project is designed as an open European platform, with partners from several EU member states, including Germany, France, Finland, Ireland, and Romania, working together to create a Europe-wide development ecosystem that accelerates innovation and strengthens Europe's technological sovereignty. NanoIC is part of the "Chips for Europe Initiative," through which the EU aims to expand its position in the global semiconductor industry and reduce dependence on non-European supply chains. According to the European Commission, NanoIC focuses on future applications such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, high-performance computing, 6G communication, and medical technology. With this investment, the EU underscores its claim to treat semiconductors as a strategic key technology, aiming to keep more value creation in Europe, shorten innovation cycles, and strengthen the competitiveness of the European electronics and semiconductor industry
