GlobalFoundries acquires photonics foundry AMF in Singapore

GlobalFoundries has acquired Singapore-based silicon photonics specialist Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF), expanding both its manufacturing presence and its technology portfolio for optical communications and AI-powered data infrastructures. With this acquisition, GF gains AMF's production facilities, intellectual property, and engineering teams, making it the world's largest pure-play silicon photonics foundry by revenue. AMF operates a 200-mm manufacturing platform, which is expected to scale to 300 mm, and brings over 15 years of photonics expertise, complementing GlobalFoundries' existing U.S. operations. The move addresses the growing demand for photonics-based data pathways, as copper interconnects increasingly reach their physical limits in high-performance computing and AI data centers. GF is also expanding its photonics capacity in New York and, with AMF, accelerating the ramp-up of production in Singapore. The company further plans to establish a "Centre of Excellence" for silicon photonics in Singapore to develop next-generation technologies
