Larger wafers, greater ambitions for Finnish microelectronics

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has completed the transition of its semiconductor manufacturing in the Micronova cleanroom to 200-millimeter silicon wafers. The upgrade from the previous 150 mm equipment is seen as a strategic step to strengthen Finland's role in the European semiconductor landscape. According to Piia Konstari, director of Microfabrication services at VTT, the investment is part of Finland's goal to strengthen its role and position in the European specialized microelectronics sector and to contribute to Europe's technological sovereignty. The project has been ongoing since 2019 and was funded by Business Finland, the Finnish Research Council, the EU project PREVAIL, and VTT's own funds from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment
