'If you can read this, you are much too close'

Ever imagined circuit designers being serious individuals, working away in a sterile environment thinking of nothing than circuit design? Well, think again. And have a closer look.

When recently tearing down a Samsung Galaxy tablet, Chipworks came across an Infineon PMB5703 device. "This device is an impressive single chip, dual-mode RF transceiver IC, with integrated baseband functionality and 3G digRF standard interface. By making the digital part independent from the RF implememtation, it removes the need for an additional baseband IC", the analysts state. But, they also found several cool silicon art pieces, contradicting the notion of 'no-nosense German circuit designers'. (Or circuit designers in general, come to think of it.) This one for instance. The sentence is quite true in fact, as the wording is 10 times smaller than a human hair (The o in the word you is 1.5 µm x 2.0 µm, an average human hair is 25 µm in diameter).© Chipworks
