Intelligent power modules with new optocoupler from CT Micro

CT Micro offers the CTS480, an interface optocoupler for intelligent power modules (IPM) with a high CMR (Common Mode Rejection) value. It contains an AlGaAs LED and a photodetector with integrated Schmitt trigger to provide logic-compatible waveforms so that no additional waveform design is required. The highly integrated, compact power coupler is designed to drive motors in applications such as household appliances, fans, pumps and general drives.

The minimised runtime difference improves the efficiency of inverters by reducing the switching dead time. The CTS480 has an increased common mode transient immunity of at least 10 kV/ μs at VCM = 1000 V, which is guaranteed over the operating temperature range of -40 °C to +100 °C.

The interface coupler enables an optimised PCB design with a small size and low system costs. This simplifies the design, improves reliability and reduces the number of components, while shortening the time to market. The component has UL 1577, EN 60747-5-5 and IEC62368 safety approvals.

Features include a compact SMD-6 package, 8 mm creepage distance and 7 mm air gap, high speed of typ. 4MBd and a positive output type (totem pole output). The operating voltage range is from 4.5V to 30V, the isolation voltage is 5000V and the threshold input current is 5mA (min). The propagation delay TPLH / TPHL is 250ns (max.).
