ABB cuts jobs at one Mississippi plant, expands another

In an effort to improve quality and delivery and cut costs, Swiss company ABB has announced it will cut 120 jobs at its Southaven, Mississippi facility and consolidate work to other plants in Mexico and elsewhere in the United States.

WREG in Memphis is reporting that the transition is being executed in phases and will be completed by July. In a company statement, ABB said it plans to offer severance packages and work with laid-off employees who may be interested in open positions at the Jonesboro, Arkansas or Athens, Tennessee plants. ABB provides power and automation technologies for utility, transport and infrastructure industries, with four primary divisions encompassing power grids, electrification products, industrial automation, and robotics and motion. Also announced this week, Zurich-based ABB said it would create 50 new jobs and fill 150 previously announced jobs at its factory in nearby Senatobia, Mississippi, but said the two moves are not related. A company press release noted that USD 36 million is being spent to expand the advanced technology manufacturing operations at the Senatobia plant, which opened in 2016. ABB President of the Americas Greg Scheu said, "Since 2010, ABB has invested over USD 14 billion in the United States, and the U.S. represents the largest market for our products. We will continue to invest in the products we make here and the people who make them, as we expand to meet customer demand.”
