EMS: M&A activities increase dramatically from 2Q/2010

There were 15 completed transactions in 3Q/2010, a decided increase in the M&A trend compared to 2Q/2010 and each of the 4 quarters in 2009. Overall economic conditions have improved in 2010 which has positively affected M&A activity within the EMS sector, writes analyst firm Lincoln International.

Vertical / horizontal convergences represented 6 transactions (40% of total activity); there were 4 EMS divestitures in 3Q/2010 (27% of total activity); the number of OEM divestitures was 2; 2 transactions were classified as private equity investment and only 1 EMS consolidation was recorded for the 3Q/2010. Transactions by size for the quarter were led by the Micro Tier, totalling 10 (67% of all transactions), followed by 3 transactions that were categorized as Large Tier in 3Q/2010 (around 20% of the total), the analysts continue. Finally, there were two Small Tier transactions this quarter. Larger transactions continue to remain somewhat scarce, however have increased relative to 2Q/2010.
