Osram breaks ground in Malaysia for new plant

German based Osram Opto Semiconductors broke ground recently for its LED chip factory in Penang, Malaysia.

This is a step that company has made to meet the growing global demands of the burgeoning LED market. The new plant is expected to open in the spring 2009, and will be 30,000 square meters. The factory in Penang will operate, in addition to Osram's main plant in Regensburg, Germany. This investment will make Osram the largest employer in the northern region of Malaysia. This will create more than 800 new jobs in the long term, bringing the total number to more than 3000.
