Increasing demand on the<br>EMS from the OEM

Choosing an electronics contract manufacturer used to be a relatively easy task for an OEM purchasing manager involved in outsourcing decisions. But how is the situation nowadays?
“Eight or nine years ago we were just sourcing surface mount technology (SMT) capability from EMS suppliers," says Sue Graham Johnston, vice president for volume product operations at Sun Microsystems in Santa Clara, Calif. “We wanted to know if the electronics manufacturing services provider (EMS) could build an SMT board or the chassis," she says.
