Silicon wafer shipments up 6% in 2Q/08

Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments grew over 6% during Q2/08 when compared to Q1/08 area shipments, according to the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry.

Total silicon wafer area shipments were 2,303 million square inches in the second quarter, compared to 2,163 million square inches shipped during the first quarter. Compared to the 2007 second quarter, total area shipments increased nearly five percent. "Following the slightly weaker first quarter and macro economic concerns silicon shipments grew more than 6% in Q2 which is in-line with normal seasonality for the quarter, particularly with the start of a new fiscal year for most Japanese companies” said Kazuyo Heinink, chairwoman of SEMI SMG and Vice President, New Product Marketing for MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc.,”This growth was mainly attributed to 300mm.”
