Speeding up Wi-Fi – a numbers game

There is only one thing more annoying than no internet; slow internet. Overcrowded networks might however be a thing of the past with a new technology developed by researchers from MIT.

The researchers, led by professor Dina Katabi, from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) call their system, or solution, MegaMIMO 2.0 – a solution that can transfer wireless data more than three times faster than existing systems – and at the same time doubling the signal range. In short, the system speeds up the data transfer by coordinating multiple routers at the same time – thus amplifying the effect. The system, which will soon be commercialised, works by coordinating multiple access points at the same time, on the same frequency, without creating interference or hickups. This means that MegaMIMO 2.0 could significantly improve the speed and strength of wireless networks, particularly at high-usage events like concerts, conventions and football games.
